After a lengthy stay in a local acute care hospital, Darlene Lotts arrived at River Edge Rehabilitation and Nursing severely deconditioned and weakened, with a large chronic wound that had worsened during her hospitalization. Her road to recovery seemed daunting, but with the support of our dedicated therapy team and a comprehensive plan of care, Darlene was able to regain her independence and improve her quality of life.
A Collaborative Approach to Healing
Upon her arrival, Darlene was immediately evaluated by our Physical Therapy (PT) and Occupational Therapy (OT) teams. The therapists quickly developed a personalized Plan of Care to help Darlene achieve her goals, including improving her mobility, strength, and overall function. In addition, Darlene’s chronic wound was addressed with the expertise of our wound care nurse, who worked closely with both PT and OT to offer adaptive equipment and positioning items to increase her comfort without compromising the healing process.
Although some of Darlene’s wound treatments were painful, she remained positive and always approached therapy with a great attitude. She never missed a session, and her willingness to work through the challenges of recovery inspired her therapists and caregivers alike.

Achieving Independence
Darlene’s dedication and determination paid off. Over time, she made tremendous progress. She began ambulating unlimited distances throughout the facility without the use of any assistive devices or assistance from staff. She was even able to walk while holding her wound vac to support her recovery.
As her therapy journey came to a close, Darlene met all of her goals and successfully graduated from therapy. She’s now focused on transitioning home, where she looks forward to being surrounded by her belongings and having more frequent visits from her family.
A Heartfelt Thank You
Reflecting on her time at River Edge, Darlene shared how grateful she is for the care and support she received throughout her recovery process. She stated, “I am so lucky to have chosen River Edge for my therapy,” and added, “I would recommend this facility and team emphatically.”
We’re so proud of Darlene and her perseverance in the face of adversity. Her success story is a true testament to the power of teamwork, therapy, and a positive attitude. Congratulations, Ms. Lotts!
